Prepare an Emergency Kit
Make sure everyone in your family knows where to find candles, matches, batteries, flashlights, water and non-perishable food. These are the items that should make up your home emergency kit, along with a radio in case power loss is extensive and you lose the use of your digital communication methods.
For groceries, purchase plenty of non-refrigerant foods, such as canned fruits/veggies/meats, bread, chips, breakfast bars, etc. It’s best to buy and store several gallons of drinking water for emergency access, planning at least one gallon per individual, for at least three days. Fill all bathtubs with warm water for sanitary purposes, and keep toilet flushing to an absolute minimum to preserve water.
Purchase a Non-Electrical Heat Source
Fireplaces and wood stoves are excellent heat sources which can also be used for cooking when necessary. Be sure to stock up on plenty of firewood (or gas for non-electric heaters) beforehand. If your home does not have a wood stove or fireplace, you can invest in a portable, non-electric heater.
Know What to Do When You Lose Heat
In the case of extremely low temperatures, heat insulation is a must. To prevent heat loss from your home, avoid opening doors that lead outside. If possible, exit from your garage instead. You can also tuck towels beneath doors to block drafts, as well as close blinds and curtains to insulate windows.
Most importantly, take preliminary measures to prevent your pipes and faucets from freezing. A few steps include opening all kitchen and bathroom cabinets to allow warm air circulation and allowing faucets to drip. Water damage during a power outage only makes the situation worse!
